LiDAR Navigation
LiDAR is an autonomous navigation system that allows robots to understand their surroundings in a remarkable way. It is a combination of laser scanning and an Inertial Measurement System (IMU) receiver and Global Navigation Satellite System.
It's like having an eye on the road alerting the driver of potential collisions. It also gives the vehicle the agility to respond quickly.
How LiDAR Works
LiDAR (Light detection and Ranging) employs eye-safe laser beams that survey the surrounding environment in 3D. This information is used by the onboard computers to guide the robot, ensuring safety and accuracy.
Like its radio wave counterparts radar and sonar, LiDAR measures distance by emitting laser pulses that reflect off objects. These laser pulses are then recorded by sensors and utilized to create a real-time 3D representation of the surroundings known as a point cloud. The superior sensing capabilities of LiDAR when in comparison to other technologies is built on the laser's precision. This results in precise 2D and 3-dimensional representations of the surrounding environment.
ToF LiDAR sensors determine the distance to an object by emitting laser pulses and measuring the time taken to let the reflected signal reach the sensor. The sensor is able to determine the range of a surveyed area based on these measurements.
This process is repeated several times per second to produce an extremely dense map where each pixel represents an observable point. The resulting point cloud is often used to determine the elevation of objects above the ground.
For example, the first return of a laser pulse might represent the top of a building or tree and the final return of a pulse usually represents the ground surface. The number of returns is dependent on the amount of reflective surfaces scanned by one laser pulse.
LiDAR can also determine the type of object by the shape and the color of its reflection. For example green returns can be an indication of vegetation while a blue return could be a sign of water. In addition red returns can be used to determine the presence of an animal within the vicinity.
Another way of interpreting LiDAR data is to use the data to build a model of the landscape. The most well-known model created is a topographic map which shows the heights of terrain features. These models can be used for various reasons, such as road engineering, flooding mapping inundation modeling, hydrodynamic modelling, coastal vulnerability assessment, and more.
LiDAR is among the most crucial sensors for Autonomous Guided Vehicles (AGV) since it provides real-time knowledge of their surroundings. This helps AGVs navigate safely and efficiently in complex environments without the need for human intervention.
LiDAR Sensors
LiDAR is comprised of sensors that emit and detect laser pulses, photodetectors that convert those pulses into digital data and computer processing algorithms. These algorithms transform this data into three-dimensional images of geospatial objects such as contours, building models, and digital elevation models (DEM).
The system measures the amount of time taken for the pulse to travel from the object and return. The system is also able to determine the speed of an object by measuring Doppler effects or the change in light speed over time.
The number of laser pulse returns that the sensor collects and the way their intensity is characterized determines the quality of the output of the sensor. A higher scanning rate can result in a more detailed output while a lower scan rate could yield more general results.
In addition to the sensor, other crucial components in an airborne LiDAR system are a GPS receiver that can identify the X, Y and Z locations of the LiDAR unit in three-dimensional space, and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) that measures the tilt of the device, such as its roll, pitch, and yaw. In addition to providing geographical coordinates, IMU data helps account for the effect of weather conditions on measurement accuracy.
There are two types of LiDAR scanners- solid-state and mechanical. Solid-state LiDAR, which includes technologies like Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems and Optical Phase Arrays, operates without any moving parts. Mechanical LiDAR, which includes technology like lenses and mirrors, can perform with higher resolutions than solid-state sensors but requires regular maintenance to ensure proper operation.
Based on the type of application, different LiDAR scanners have different scanning characteristics and sensitivity. For robot vacuum cleaner lidar , high-resolution LiDAR can identify objects, as well as their surface textures and shapes, while low-resolution LiDAR is predominantly used to detect obstacles.
The sensitivities of the sensor could also affect how quickly it can scan an area and determine surface reflectivity, which is important to determine the surfaces. LiDAR Trajectory

One of the most significant aspects is the speed at which the lidar and INS generate their respective solutions to position, because this influences the number of matched points that can be identified and the number of times the platform has to reposition itself. The speed of the INS also influences the stability of the integrated system.
The SLFP algorithm, which matches features in the point cloud of the lidar with the DEM determined by the drone gives a better trajectory estimate. This is particularly relevant when the drone is operating in undulating terrain with large pitch and roll angles. This is a major improvement over the performance of traditional lidar/INS integrated navigation methods that use SIFT-based matching.
Another improvement is the creation of future trajectory for the sensor. Instead of using a set of waypoints to determine the control commands, this technique generates a trajectory for every new pose that the LiDAR sensor may encounter. The trajectories created are more stable and can be used to guide autonomous systems over rough terrain or in areas that are not structured. The underlying trajectory model uses neural attention fields to encode RGB images into a neural representation of the environment. Contrary to the Transfuser method which requires ground truth training data for the trajectory, this method can be learned solely from the unlabeled sequence of LiDAR points.
